Berchtesgaden Royal Palace
The former monastery of the Augustiner was home of the Prince’s provosts of Berchtesgaden. From 1810 until today, it serves as the residential castle for the Bavarian royal dynasty. The tour is on three floors: from the Romanesque cloister (about 1180) you enter the double-aisled Gothic hall (pre 1400) with a significant collection of sculptures from Southern German origin (about 1500), among other things are two early works by Tilman Riemenschneider. Three hunting rooms are astounding with Baroque hunting rifles, coats of armour and swords; two Renaissance halls with original furniture and tapestries (16th century). Precious porcelain from the manufactories of Nymphenburg and Frankenthal are represented in the great dining hall. Amongst the hunting trophies hangs the heaviest Bavarian stag trophy (40.3 lbs. !). The Empire and Biedermeier rooms display valuable paintings of the 19th century’s “Munich school”. The upper rose garden with Renaissance fountains allows for an unbelievable view of the mountains and the “Watzmann”. The deer collection, which recently opened in the stables of the castle in 2005, displays the scholarly results of game research by Duke Albrecht of Bavaria, who received an honorary doctorate.
